Transforming a 1950s warehouse into a state of the art wellness studio

Modern fitness centres are no longer a set of rooms containing a few treadmills and weights. They are now moving towards multidisciplinary studios with elaborate design and smart technology. And so, our client needed a fitout that could do just that in hopes of reflecting their vision of changing the way people age—building this required thorough construction expertise and meticulous planning. We were to take the shell of an old fabric manufacturing warehouse and transform it into a sophisticated, light-filled studio. Read on to see how we did.

Fitting out an old warehouse

When working with older spaces, particularly warehouses, finding the balance between preserving and updating its existing features can be challenging. Our role in fitting out this particular space meant modernising some of the existing elements, such as lighting and ceiling tiles, whilst refurbishing others – including the structural beams and trusses.

An intricate lighting plan

The design intent for this fitout incorporated several lighting fixtures to help soften the studio space and forge a moodiness in each room. From a build perspective, however, the existing lighting plan was not sufficient for the revised layout and fitting out an adequate lighting plan required all-new electrical cabling laid throughout the entire space. By doing so, we were able to construct a fitout that could host a series of recessed, dimmable LED strips along the hallway and meet the aesthetical requirements of the design direction.

When one became six

In the same way, ensuring the plumbing works could support the addition of 6 new bathrooms and toilets, we needed to lay an entirely new waste pipe. Since the pipe filled almost the whole length of the premise and required an excavator to drill 1m into the adjoining tenancy, we needed to be smart with the scheduling of trades. And so, this process occurred early on in the build of the fitout to allow for a smooth and timely project completion.
