At Canopy Fitouts, it’s always our priority to design and build retail spaces that excite and inspire. With this in mind, we were given the opportunity to work on one of our most exciting projects to date. Resident boutique wine shop, Blackhearts & Sparrows, have built their reputation on making high-quality wine available to the local community. When we were approached to help expand their operations to Newtown, Geelong, we hoped to design and build a shop fitout that would do precisely that.

Transforming a run-down retail space

Being an existing blind shop, our greatest challenge in designing the shop fitout was transforming the retail space into an inviting and eye-catching shopfront to its Newtown locale whilst still being affordable for our client. This was achieved by installing a new ply ceiling and polished concrete flooring, coupled with vibrant green paint over the existing plaster walls.

Preserving Blackheart’s style and flare

It was important that the shop fitout still aligned with the context of their brand as well as the area of Newtown. With the inclusion of their signature black steel shelves and recycled timber cabinetry, we were still able to put together an affordable shop fitout that would respect the look and feel of other Blackhearts & Sparrows stores all around Melbourne.

Designing for cost-efficiency

Given the large size of the retail space and the budget for this project, our focus at Canopy was to utilise the existing structure of the building and still remain within our client’s budget. When designing the floor plan for their shop fitout, we opted for angular shelving rather than linear shelving - this allowed us to break up the wide shop front and eliminate costs on unnecessary shelving. This choice also enabled us to open retail space, optimise it for foot traffic, and make it easier for customers to navigate.

Being a part of the design and construction of the newly completed fitout for Blackhearts & Sparrows in Newtown has been an incredible journey. We took the old bones of the space and transformed it into a fun, fresh and purpose-built space for the people of Geelong and surrounding areas, by incorporating custom displays and showcasing an industrial aesthetic that pays respect to the area and its history. We have come to know the owners of Blackhearts and Sparrows personally over time and have been entrusted with the design of their second fitout. We could not be more happier with the result of the design and construction of the new space and we hope for it to become a landmark store for the residents in Geelong.
