When we design and construct café fitouts, we recognise that no two spaces are the same, just like no two clients are the same. And so, we take pride in our ability to offer tailored solutions for our clients – especially when on a budget. For Café One 88, a café nestled in the leafy suburb of Bayswater, we delivered a fully equipped café fitout into a 70sqm retail space that dated back to the eighties.

The client envisioned a cafe that could become a part of the community – a cafe fitout where locals could gather and enjoy good quality coffee and food. To achieve this, we played off the existing industrial elements within the space and introduced warm organic elements to soften the overall aesthetic and establish a sense of homeliness. Black hues and polished concrete were met with warm timbers and exposed brick – with the use of black paint continuing from the interior to the exterior to catch the eyes of those passing by.

Our primary concern for this particular café fitout was getting the most value for money through intelligent design solutions. We hoped to allocate spend to areas that would have the greatest impact on the customer. For example, exposed brick tiles on the feature wall and solid timber cladding on the service counter – were the first things the customers would see as they entered the space. Similarly, we were able to specify affordable alternatives in other areas, such as the charcoal paint along the rear walls and blackboard paint, to function as the menu display while still preserving the visual impact we intended.

To deliver effective café fitouts, understanding the business' service staff and customer dining needs is essential in planning out its layout, especially when fitting out a tight space like this. To allow for adequate seating for patrons, we included banquet seating which served as a space-saving alternative to stand-alone chairs. And to cater for the smooth movement of service staff, we planned for the commercial kitchen to flow into the service area as one back-of-house.
