The Geelong Advertiser

The Geelong Advertiser is the oldest paper in Victoria, first published in November 1840, making it the second oldest paper in Australia. With a rich history of reporting regional news with integrity and bi-partisanship, The Geelong Advertiser still flourishes with local publication daily. The task at hand

Our task was to create an open-plan office fitout design that facilitated the modern workplace. It had to be open-plan so staff from different areas of the business could collaborate easily when required but also allow spaces where staff could work autonomously when required within their teams.

We created a number of meeting rooms, boardrooms and a couple of private offices per the clients’ working requirements, but we were given a lot of freedom in the initial design phase to guide the overall look and feel of the interior – a truly exciting experience.

Our interior design team’s vision was to keep the space industrial to pay homage to the building, the area and the newspaper itself.

How was this commercial fitout executed?

For this project with The Geelong Advertiser, one of the challenges we faced was balancing the lighting. Canopy created a central meeting room that sits under the tree with all four sides made of glass. To avoid light obstruction, we built a lot of low-height walls. This had a double effect meaning the tree could be seen from more areas of the open plan. The light now passes through easily so there are no dark areas – and the addition of the skylight makes it feel as if you are working outside, which can help foster greater productivity.

Our Interior design team used a combination of concrete, steel, slate, lots of timber and plants and greenery for this office fitout to create an industrial, heritage look and feel that reflects the long history of the newspaper. There is a wide array of different textures and detail within each piece of steel, timber and concrete for an added element of sophistication.

It’s all about the process!

Design Phase

Our Consultant and Designer meet with you to discuss your business fitout needs and get a clear perspective on your vision. We will discuss your requirements and what challenges you are currently facing with your workspace; whether it’s a size issue, a functionality improvement or simply a workspace update, we will work with you to find the most suitable commercial fitout solution for your requirements and budget.


We prepare proposals based on the brief from the initial meeting where we go through and plan the look and feel of the proposed business fitout project. This is where we get feedback from you so we can proceed to the next step. We offer cost effective solutions for an affordable fitout, so your budget is always top of mind.

Site Commencement

All costs are agreed upon during this stage and the outline of the project and timelines are discussed. We organise all relevant permits to be approved and issue you with a final Construction Set, Fixtures and Finishes Schedule and a Project Schedule.


We carefully source and recruit the right contractors for each fitout construction job. We work with our team of Designers and suppliers to ensure consistency across the look and feel of the project, and conduct weekly site visits with you so you can check in on the fitout and how it is coming together.

At completion, we conduct a handover to you after ensuring you’ve had a thorough walk through of the new space and make sure you are happy with your completed project. We continue to work with you to take care of any additional needs and ensure they are resolved in readiness for your relocation.
