Safe System Solutions is an international road safety consultancy that recently opened its sixth office on the bustling locale of Burke Road, Camberwell. Canopy were given the opportunity to take the bones of a 19th century structure and transform it into an eye-catching office space. Read on to see how we built a considered office fitout that perfectly balanced aesthetic with functionality.

Like with many buildings situated on Burke Road, fitting out an office into a 19th-century heritage building posed significant challenges across the project's design phases. When working with narrow and small spaces, it can be hard to design an office fitout that feels spacious while still retaining its natural light. With this in mind, we positioned meeting rooms towards the front of the tenancy to utilise the natural light flowing from the front of the tenancy. By the same token, we positioned highlight windows throughout the fitout to let light flow into the central work area

It's not often we build offices into buildings with so much character, especially those which have retained their foundational elements. We were lucky to uncover and restore a technicoloured terrazzo floor that had been preserved from the existing building. And so we took inspiration from this to form the basis of our colour palette and focal point in the office space. Specs of pale green, rust, black and grey were met with reciprocal tones selected for the kitchenette joinery, meeting rooms and workstations – where the colour green also served as a subtle nod to the client's branding.

Balancing bolder hues was essential in this space, as we worked with a compact office fitout. Lighter tones, inclusive of white, beige and grey were used to balance the greens and blacks and create the illusion of light and space. We opted for light timbers across the flooring and wall cladding to soften the office space and create a sense of warmth.

In designing this office fitout, we carefully designed a space that could functionally respond to the strident surrounding environment. On the high-traffic strip of Burke Road, noise control was a high priority in our client's office fitout. We built two isolation pods with acoustic panelling to create a quiet space for employees to take calls and work in, and featured acoustic elements throughout the space to reduce sound in work areas.
