SBA Law

A sleek and stylish revamp for this professional firm

SBA Law

With over 70 years of continued legal services to Australia’s leading businesses, institutions and private groups, SBA Law has an outstanding reputation in the market. That same reputation meant that SBA Law’s new office fitout in Melbourne’s CBD had to be professional and modern, yet timeless.

The team at SBA Law were very open and trusting in allowing our interior designers and architects to lead the fitout project, and we dedicated ourselves to delivering an office fitout that was sophisticated, functional, and reflective of the firm’s premium clientele services.

The project needs and our design

One of the key requests for this office fitout was to create an exceptional welcome area at reception; something with enough “wow factor” to impress prospective clients but also displayed the professionalism of the firm.
Our team of interior designers experimented with simple patterns, textures and different tones of timber. This is reflected through the materiality of the reception counter, using a mix of timber and stone.

We wanted to create a space that was noticeably different from what people considered a law firm to be. When people think ‘law firm’, there is usually a stigma attached that it is very corporate and sterile. Our designers and architects set to work on making sure this office fitout was as far from sterile as possible, yet still functional, professional and impressive a workspace for the team at SBA Law.

How was this commercial fitout executed?

The lead interior architect’s inspiration for this office fitout was American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, a prolific advocate for nature within the interior. Once entering the space, we knew that we could draw upon his themes to guide the design process, and as the space was linear in nature, we wanted to bring a sense of continuity throughout the entire floor.

Timber encompasses most of the floor at SBA Law which instantly softens the space and takes away the preconceived ideas of how a law firm is meant to look and function. The consistent application of the timber in the reception area, wrapping onto the walls and ceiling means that ‘continuity’ can therefore play its part again by running the length of the corridor and finally ending on the rear wall. This feature pays homage to the themes frequently worked by Wright in many of his most well-known projects.

‘Continuity’ is also reflected in the design through the glass partitions and aluminium frames that have been intelligently built to design an open concept workspace, with enough privacy for autonomous work. These glass partitions were designed specifically to portray the theme of ‘continuity’, where the doors camouflage within the partitions themselves by also having the same frame design.

Smart materials to capture the look and feel of the business

Using natural materials offers a certain depth and grounding to an office fitout. Our interior designers leveraged this by using stone on the reception counter which ‘grounds’ the space, acting as a soft yet solid presence for when the clients walk through. Glass was also a major part of the design. Level 15 offers impressive views of Melbourne city, so it was essential to maintain that visibility from all meeting rooms, as well as utilise the abundant natural light.

The central design theme relied on a good foundation, and while the space was great there were a number of hurdles that had to be overcome. Relying on expertise and experience, our interior architects, along with our designers, were able to mitigate any obstacle and all risks, to deliver a bespoke office fitout that not only captures the imagination of SBA Law’s team of employees, but also inspires, comforts and builds trust within their clientele.
