Restoring Heritage Charm for a Melbourne Law Firm
Driven by a passion for preserving and reclaiming heritage architecture, this Melbourne law firm embarked on the restoration of a character-filled building with a clear vision: transform it into a functional, modern office while retaining its historic charm. While the building required significant refurbishment, it still featured its original timber wall and ceiling linings - a strong foundation for the restoration effort to build upon.
Working With History, Not Against It
Canopy Fitouts was engaged to deliver the internal fitout works, including the installation of new flooring and the construction of a kitchen and bathroom – creating a modern, practical workspace that respected the building's heritage character throughout.
Heritage restoration projects present a particular kind of challenge. Every decision has to work on two levels at once: meeting the practical, compliant standards of a contemporary workplace, while protecting the very details that make the building worth preserving in the first place.

Designing Accessibility Into a Heritage Footprint
One of the most significant challenges encountered was the absence of a DDA-compliant bathroom on this level of the building. As a result, the original bathroom design required substantial redesign to meet accessibility standards.
Balancing compliance requirements with the client's vision for an elegant, heritage-inspired space demanded a thoughtful, collaborative design approach. The final solution successfully delivered full accessibility while preserving the old-world character that defined the project. It’s proof that compliance and character don't need to be at odds, even in a heritage context.
Hiding the Practical in Plain Sight
The revised bathroom design also needed to accommodate an accessible sewer pump system. Ensuring future maintenance access without compromising the aesthetic quality of the space presented an additional design challenge.
This was resolved through the incorporation of concealed access panels, integrated seamlessly within the stone wall lining. The result maintains the visual integrity of the finishes while providing genuine, practical access for ongoing maintenance – a detail invisible to anyone using the space, but essential to how the building will perform for years to come.
Smart Sourcing Without Compromising the Vision
The original stone specified by the client was identified as a significant cost driver early in the project. Through proactive value engineering, Canopy Fitouts sourced a like-for-like alternative stone that closely matched the desired appearance while delivering substantial cost savings.
This is a good example of how the right fitout partner can protect a client's vision and their budget at the same time – finding a path that maintains the premium aesthetic the client wanted, without asking them to compromise on either look or spend.
